Our vision
Through NUNOS, we aim to establish regional and efficient nutrient cycles to make agriculture more sustainable and resilient to the challenges of climate change.
We believe that future generations will be able to enjoy the same variety and quality of food that we do today – without major restrictions due to climate change. With innovative approaches and a clear focus on sustainability, we want to help shape the agriculture of tomorrow.
Our story
NUNOS is a spin-off of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) based in Cologne. Our technology was originally developed for the recycling of nitrogen-containing wastewater in closed habitats such as lunar or Martian stations. It enables astronauts to cultivate fresh food in greenhouses by converting (human) urine into plant fertilizer – even in the most remote corners of space.
The pressing challenges on earth, such as the ongoing nitrate pollution of groundwater and the increasing extreme weather conditions caused by climate change, prompted us to further develop the process and adapt it specifically for the treatment of cattle manure and digestate.
Our goal: space research with direct benefits for the Earth – so that innovations from the future can revolutionize agriculture today.
